1 Original Word: ἀμήν
2 Word Origin: of Hebrew origin (0543)
3 Transliterated Word: amen
4 TDNT/TWOT Entry: 1:335,53
5 Phonetic Spelling: am-ane'

  2. verily, amen
    1. at the beginning of a discourse - surely, truly, of a truth
    2. at the end - so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled. It was a custom, which passed over from the synagogues to the Christian assemblies, that when he who had read or discoursed, had offered up solemn prayer to God, the others responded Amen, and thus made the substance of what was uttered their own.
The word "amen" is a most remarkable word. It was transliterateddirectly from the Hebrew into the Greek of the New Testament, theninto Latin and into English and many other languages, so that it ispractically a universal word. It has been called the best known wordin human speech. The word is directly related -- in fact, almostidentical -- to the Hebrew word for "believe" (amam), or faithful. Thus, it came to mean "sure" or "truly", an expression of absolutetrust and confidence. -- HMM

"For" (as used in Acts 2:38 "for the forgiveness...") could have twomeanings. If you saw a poster saying "Jesse James wanted forrobbery", "for" could mean Jesse is wanted so he can commit arobbery, or is wanted because he has committed a robbery. The latersense is the correct one. So too in this passage, the word "for"signifies an action in the past. Otherwise, it would violate theentire tenor of the NT teaching on salvation by grace and not by works.
9 English: into/for
0 Usage: abundantly, against, among, as, at, (back-)ward, before, by, concerning, + continual, + far more exceeding, for (intent, purpose), fore, + forth, in(-so much that, -to) (among, at, unto), to the intent that, + of one mind, + never, of, (up-)on, + perish, + set at one again, (so) that, therefore(-unto), throughout, til, to (be, the end, -ward), (here-)until(-to), ...ward, (where-)fore, with
